There are a few key features any high-quality portable garage should have.
Keep these in mind when you’re shopping for your new portable garage:
Portability
Any portable garage should be, as the name implies, portable.
If it looks more permanent than portable, maybe it’s not the right one for you.
You can also consider a temporary portable garage to use for a short time and then take it back down when it’s no longer needed.
Portability is a staple of modern design.
For example:
- There are Portable Solar Chargers
- and Portable Solar Generators
- Portable Stoves are becoming popular
- Portable Water Filters are a must-own
- and there are even Portable Camping Toilets
And nowadays, there doesn’t seem like much you can’t take with you anymore.
Technology is getting lighter, more portable, and more durable every day.
Durability
You’re getting one to protect your valuables from the elements.
So they need to stand up to severe weather.
Some portable garages use more durable materials for the walls and framing than others.
That makes a big difference in the long run.
The last thing you want is your garage collapsing on your vehicles.
Cheap framing or poor-quality canvas won’t hold up over time.
Pay attention to the pole diameter specified by the vendor – the bigger, the better.
And PVC or polyethylene canvas covers often offer the best rain and UV protection.
Guarantees / Warranties
Portable garages take a beating.
But, like all survival and outdoor equipment, it will weather and will eventually break.
That’s why most portable garages come with warranties.
But the length of the warranties will differ significantly.
A long-term one may make sense, depending on your circumstances.
Finding The RIGHT Portable Garage For YOU
There are many factors to account for when shopping for a new portable garage.
Most portable garages are similar in design, but no two companies make them exactly alike.
- Some will be bigger; some will be smaller.
- Some have walls; others only have roofs.
- Most are fairly lightweight; others are incredibly durable and heavy.
Portable garage differences run the gamut.
So, here are a couple of things to think about.
First off, how big do you need your portable garage to be?
Are you trying to fit a couple of motorcycles under it?
Or do you want to be able to add a car or two horses?
Basically, how much are you trying to store inside your garage?
Figure out what kind of storage space you need and shop accordingly.
Then, there is the matter of the environment.
Where do you live?
What sort of weather events will it see on a regular basis?
Different brands of portable garages use different designs and materials.
They often can function better in certain types of weather.
For example:
Some portable garages can handle a bit of a snow load, while others cannot.
And finally, what are you storing?
This is important because some portable garages offer sidewalls, and others do not.
This is not a big deal if you’re storing a car in your driveway.
But if you store power tools or electrical equipment there, you will want more protection.

Portable garages are beautiful in their simplicity.
They provide a simple but important service: shelter.
And temporary garages do it very well.
You can use the protection they provide to accomplish any end you put your mind to.
Here are a few of our favorites:
Motor Vehicles
Obviously, you can use these to protect your motor vehicles.
You don’t sleep outside, uncovered, and unprotected from the elements.
So why should your expensive toys?
The fact is, the weather is tough on metal frames and engines.
Vehicles last longer when you protect them from the elements.
With a portable garage, you get that protection anywhere in the wilderness or any place you call home.
Be it your collection of:
- cars
- boats
- motorbikes
- motorcycles
- snowmobiles
- snowplows
- ATV’s
- Vespa’s
- Mopeds
Bicycles
These days, mountain and road bikes can cost as much as a motorcycle.
So you have to protect those things!
The longer you keep them safe from rain, snow, and sun, the longer your bike will ride.
Agricultural Equipment
Farmers often use temporary garages to protect their tractors, trailers, and tillers.
Or any other agricultural gear, for that matter.
Replacing farming equipment is an expensive prospect.
Not one that many farmers like to face very often.
Portable garages are necessary for farms with low storage space or separated plots of land.
Shade and Cover For Livestock
Horses love portable garages.
Because they can park themselves right inside them if things get too cold or too wet under the sky.
Donkeys, dogs, cats, cows, pigs, and chickens will all also enjoy using a portable garage for shelter.
When the weather gets too hot or too cold, animals will seek any shelter they can find.
So why not give them a portable garage (especially if you travel with them)?
Fish Cleaning Station
You’ll be glad to have some cover when it is dumping rain, and you get back from a long day out on the water.
Because when you have sixty salmon to fillet, there is no better place to do it than inside a portable garage.
I recommend hanging some lights from the framing so you can see what you are doing.
You also don’t have to worry much about blood and guts running all over the ground.
Because you’re protected from that torrential downpour.
Post Hunt Gathering Spot
In a similar situation, what happens if it is snowing or raining when you get back from your hunt?
Do you intend on butchering your kill yourself in the rain?
Get inside your portable garage and let the rain (or snow) come.
Add a tent stove to your garage for a warm winter workshop!
A Storage Shed
Portable garages can store your extra stuff like a regular garage or shed.
So instead of paying monthly to rent a storage garage somewhere else.
Why not invest in a portable garage once and save in the long run?
You can store anything from haybales, firewood, fuel, and on and on.
A Work Shop
Building a table? Or a barn door? Or anything else made out of wood?
Set up shop and put the portable garage over the top.
Boom, you have got a temporary woodshop.
Mother-in-Law Guest House
I am mostly kidding… mostly.
In all seriousness, a portable garage can make for a decent shelter in a pinch.
Because at its core, it’s like a large canvas tent.
And if you don’t have any other options, the portable garage is a wise investment.
It could also double as a backup sleeping space for those extra special guests…
Terrible Uses For Portable Garages
The thing about portable garages is this:
While they may be portable, they’re rarely extremely packable.
That is to say; they are still heavy and bulky even after you break them down for moving and storage.
You cannot pack these bad boys up in a saddle bag or a back-backing pack.
In some situations, the idea of using a portable garage is more exciting than practical.
So, here are some situations when a portable garage does not work well:
Multi-Day Horseback Trip
It would be nice to bring a horse tent with you everywhere you ride.
But unless you’ve got a support vehicle carrying it between locations, it’s too big for your saddle.
Portable garages are best to set up at the ranch.
Backcountry Trips
Even if you ride an ATV out into the wilderness, keeping a portable garage with you is going to be cumbersome.
And forget about it if you are backpacking out there.
Single Day Use
If you are going out for a day trip in your jeep, bringing a portable garage with you is not necessary.
The same goes for day trips on motorbikes, ATVs, etc.
It’s fairly cumbersome to haul, pack, drag, and set up for such a short period of time.
Of course, there are exceptions, but for the most part, they are best when used for several days, months, or years in one location.
Motorcycle Road Trips
If you are out on the road with your steel horse, do not even think about it.
Trying to pack a portable garage onto the back of that thing is impossible.
Without a support vehicle, your cycle is going to have to suffer the elements.
Final Thoughts
Temporary garages are useful in so many capacities.
They are a simple and effective way to improve your storage capacities.
They protect your vehicles from harsh weather and make for excellent temporary workshops.
For woodworking, butchery or auto work, band practice, whatever…
If you are a motor enthusiast or someone who needs a bit of extra storage space, get a portable garage.
